Discover MorePitigliano
Province: Grosseto
The spectacle of its view, which appears suddenly from the curve of Madonna della Grazie, is enough to merit a visit. Built on a spur of tufa and in the shadow of the magnificent Orsini castle, flanked by the arches of an aqueduct from the Medici period, it still has its rustic houses in the colour peculiar to this rock, which climb interspersed with natural caves which are today used as cellars or sheds.
Pitigliano is also known as the little Jerusalem of Italy because of a Jewish community which arrived there in the 15th C. and which continues today, although small and despite emigration towards Florence and Livorno. Among the numerous monuments which are conserved, beyond the Palazzo Orsini there is the Church of S. Maria from the Renaissance, the Duomo, and in Piazza S. Gregorio VII the column decorated with travertine marble which supports a bear, symbol of the Orsini family.
