Province: Grosseto
A city with Etruscan origins, but with Roman and medieval elements, it is situated at the entrance of Grosseto, in the direction of Siena. Famous for its extended city wall, a renowned example of Etruscan defensive architecture, it has preserved some remains of the primitive city, on which is superimposed the Roman city, making this one of the most interesting archaeological centres of Tuscany. The archaeological digs can be visited from 8.30 until sunset. The place is worth a visit because it allows us to see an almost complete plan of an ancient city. In fact here you can admire the layered remains of the Etruscan Roman city, which preserves its splendid polygonal city wall, and remains of Etruscan dwellings, apart from the monumental complex from the age of the empire (the forum and its buildings, the Domus with its mosaics and its sophisticated thermal spring system, the well preserved amphitheatre, the thermal springs and the basoli paved streets with the wheel ruts of the carts) and some statues.
